🐍 “I Got Bitten by This Snake!” — What Should You Do?

The snake in this photo certainly looks intimidating, but a photograph alone isn’t enough to safely identify the species or determine whether it is venomous.

And if someone was actually bitten, the most important thing isn’t figuring out the snake’s name—it’s getting medical attention.

🚨 If You’ve Been Bitten by a Snake

Even if the bite looks small or you feel fine, seek medical care as soon as possible.

What to do:

  • 🏥 Get to an emergency department or contact your local emergency service.
  • 🧘 Stay calm and keep movement to a minimum.
  • 💍 Remove rings, watches and anything tight near the bite before swelling begins.
  • 🧼 Gently wash the wound with soap and water.
  • 🩹 Cover it with a clean, dry dressing.
  • 📸 If you can safely photograph the snake from a distance, the image may help medical professionals—but don’t approach or catch it.

❌ Never Try These “Snakebite Remedies”

Don’t:

  • Cut the wound
  • Suck out venom
  • Apply a tourniquet
  • Put ice directly on the bite
  • Try to catch or kill the snake
  • Wait for symptoms before seeking medical help

These methods can make the injury worse.

🐍 What About the Snake in This Picture?

The snake appears to be a large, dark-colored snake, but several species can look similar depending on the region, lighting and angle of the photograph.

Features such as head shape or color alone aren’t reliable enough to declare it harmless or venomous.

If this really happened during turkey hunting in the southern United States, the exact location would be important because different venomous and nonvenomous snakes occur in different areas.

⚠️ Important

If the bite actually happened earlier this week and the person has not been medically evaluated, they should still contact a healthcare professional, particularly if there is swelling, increasing pain, redness, bruising, numbness, weakness, fever or any other unusual symptom.

A snakebite is not something to treat based on a Facebook comment.
