9 SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE — EVEN WHEN YOU’RE YOUNG

Diabetes is often associated with older adults, but type 1 and type 2 diabetes can occur at younger ages too. And one of the biggest problems is that type 2 diabetes can develop slowly, sometimes with very mild symptoms—or no obvious symptoms at all.

Here are 9 warning signs worth knowing. 👇

1️⃣ You’re Extremely Thirsty 💧

Feeling unusually thirsty all the time can occur when blood glucose becomes too high.

If you’re constantly reaching for water and don’t have an obvious explanation, it deserves attention.

2️⃣ You’re Urinating Much More Often 🚽

High blood glucose can cause the kidneys to remove more glucose through urine, which can increase urination.

Waking up repeatedly during the night to urinate can also be a warning sign.

3️⃣ You Feel Exhausted 😴

Persistent unexplained fatigue can occur with diabetes because the body isn’t using glucose effectively for energy.

Of course, tiredness has many other possible causes, so it isn’t enough by itself to diagnose diabetes.

4️⃣ Your Vision Becomes Blurry 👀

High blood glucose can affect the eye and cause temporary or persistent changes in vision.

New or unexplained blurry vision should be evaluated rather than automatically blamed on tiredness or screens.

5️⃣ You’re Losing Weight Without Trying ⚖️

Unexplained weight loss can be particularly important when it occurs together with excessive thirst and frequent urination.

It can occur with diabetes, especially when insulin deficiency is significant.

6️⃣ Cuts and Sores Take a Long Time to Heal 🩹

People with diabetes can have problems with wound healing, particularly when blood glucose remains high.

A wound that repeatedly heals slowly shouldn’t simply be ignored.

7️⃣ You Keep Getting Infections 🦠

Frequent infections—including some urinary, skin and yeast infections—can occur more often in people with diabetes.

Repeated infections don’t automatically mean diabetes, but they can be a reason to get checked.

8️⃣ You Notice Tingling or Numbness 🖐️🦶

Numbness, burning or tingling in the hands or feet can occur with diabetes-related nerve damage.

This is more commonly associated with diabetes that has been present for some time, so it isn’t necessarily an early warning sign.

9️⃣ Dark Patches of Skin Appear

Dark, thicker-looking patches—especially around the neck, armpits or groin—can be associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

This skin change is called acanthosis nigricans, and it can also occur for reasons other than diabetes.

🩸 The Important Part: Symptoms Aren’t a Diagnosis

Having one or even several of these symptoms doesn’t mean you have diabetes.

The only way to determine whether you have diabetes or prediabetes is through appropriate medical evaluation and blood-glucose testing, such as an A1C or fasting glucose test.

And remember: type 2 diabetes can be present without obvious symptoms, which is why risk factors and appropriate screening matter.

🚨 Don’t Wait If Symptoms Are Sudden

If someone develops extreme thirst and urination together with vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing, severe weakness or confusion, particularly with suspected type 1 diabetes, urgent medical evaluation is important.

Your body can give you subtle clues long before a diagnosis. Don’t ignore persistent changes. ❤️
