It looks completely harmless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You finish cooking, grab a tea towel, and drape it over the oven handle because it’s convenient and always within reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there are actually several good reasons to stop doing it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udd25 1. A TOWEL IS A COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kitchen towels are usually made from cotton or other fabrics that can burn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire-safety guidance recommends keeping towels, oven mitts and other materials that can catch fire away from heat sources. NFPA<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the design of your oven and stove, the towel can be exposed to heat from the oven, nearby burners, hot cookware or escaping heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn’t mean every towel will catch fire\u2014but there is no good reason to keep combustible fabric in a heat zone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83e\udda0 2. YOUR OVEN HANDLE MAY NOT BE AS CLEAN AS YOU THINK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There’s another problem that has nothing to do with fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During cooking, you may touch the oven handle with hands that have handled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why keeping food-contact and hand-drying towels away from frequently touched appliance handles is a better hygiene habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
