That tiny pocket is traditionally called the watch pocket<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Levi Strauss & Co. developed its early riveted work trousers in the 19th century, pocket watches were common. The small pocket was designed to provide a secure place to protect a pocket watch<\/strong> while people were working. Levi Strauss & Co.’s own historical records identify it specifically as the watch pocket. Levi Strauss<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design dates back to the era of the original \u201cwaist overalls,\u201d<\/strong> the early form of what we now call blue jeans. Levi Strauss & Co. and Jacob Davis received their patent for riveted clothing in 1873<\/strong>. Levi-Strauss<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pocket watches eventually became much less common as wristwatches took over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people call this little compartment the \u201cfifth pocket.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But technically, according to Levi Strauss & Co., that’s not correct<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tiny pocket is the watch pocket<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term \u201cfifth pocket\u201d<\/strong> properly refers to the second back pocket that was added to the jeans later. Levi Strauss & Co. says the second back pocket was added in 1901<\/strong>. Levi Strauss<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
